Puppy-Safe Area Basics
- Use a small, washable, hazard-free area when you cannot supervise.
- Anything inside should be safe if chewed, peed on, pooped on, or dragged around.
- No cords, exposed outlets, shoes, cleaners, plants, trash, rugs, or small objects.
- Start small. Too much space too soon often leads to accidents and chewing.
- Fresh water should be available when supervised. Pick up the water bowl when puppy is left alone, then offer fresh water again when you return.
Bedding Reminder
It is usually best to hold off on soft beds and fluffy blankets until puppy is doing better with potty training. You can try bedding, but if it feels wet, smells like urine, or puppy soils it, take it out and wait a bit.
Apartment, Patio & Balcony Potty Note
For apartment families who cannot use common dog areas until vaccines are complete, create one designated potty spot. This may be a patio tray, balcony turf box, real grass tray, plastic kiddie pool with grass or turf, bathroom tray, or laundry-room setup.
No wrong way as long as it fits your lifestyle and puppy is consistently using a designated pee/poop area.
Treat & Food Tip
You can use your puppy’s regular kibble as training treats, especially at first. Any change in diet, too many treats, stress, travel, or excitement can bring on loose stools or diarrhea. Tiny pieces and simple routines are best in the beginning.
